GUM Syrah
Shiraz, Harcourt
2025

This Syrah comes from a vineyard we work closely with in Harcourt North.

Planted 40 years ago at the base of a slope on the northern reaches of Mt Alexander, the site sits on a visually striking mix of sand, mica-schist and Harcourt granodiorite. The clonal material is equally compelling, originally derived from massale selection cuttings from Hermitage and St-Joseph.

Harcourt granodiorite is a fascinating soil. Like granite, it formed during the Devonian period, though it contains a higher proportion of calcium-rich feldspars. Its influence on the wine is profound -bringing intensity and concentration, while the cool nature of the site ensures a long complex ripening period. The result is a wine of power and depth, held in check without elevated alcohol.

The wine is bright and fragrant. violet and blue florals lead into ripe raspberry and cherry, with black pepper, olive tapenade and a savoury note of jus gras.

I opted for syrah in the nomenclature of this wine as the style is powerful, fragrant and with glossy cool fruits.
