GUM Chardonnay
	Chardonnay, Cathedral Range
	2024

	<img width="5343" height="4109" width_o="5343" height_o="4109" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/738957d8fa8e2449658a6d946ac31807e670d0757f59cae84f3545360ee8d727/2022_GUM_CHARDONNAY.jpg" data-mid="230494307" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/738957d8fa8e2449658a6d946ac31807e670d0757f59cae84f3545360ee8d727/2022_GUM_CHARDONNAY.jpg" />
	Planted in the early 1980s, the Little River site sits perched at over 400 metres above sea level on the northern volcanic slopes of the Cathedral Range. Though technically just outside the Upper Yarra GI, its harvest occurs around three weeks later.

The high altitude, cool climate, and volcanic soils provide both concentration and freshness at low sugar levels.

Once hand-harvested with careful sorting in the vineyard, the bunches were partially crushed before being firmly pressed as whole clusters. The juice settled overnight, then transferred to a combination of new and seasoned Stockinger puncheons and stainless steel for fermentation and lees aging.

The wine then spent several months in stainless steel on fine lees before racking and bottling, unfined and unfiltered. The only addition was a small dose of sulphur.

Pale with green edges, this Chardonnay opens with glass-filling aromas of crushed rock, struck match, lime and grapefruit zest, white peach, jasmine, and spice. Flavours carry through to a dense and powerful palate, offering savoury complexity and a fine, detailed acid line.
‘An older vine site, some low key winemaking approach.
A younger gen, boutique producer of note.

This has a suppleness and prettiness. Sweet spice sits on stone fruits, ginger and red apple, the wafts of pot pourri, rose hip tea, there too. A touch of bergamot flows in, some cedar and clove gently, green almond and nougat faintly there. Some slippery mouth perfume? Happens. In this, a gentle wine with freshness and cooling fruit profile on its side. In all this too, immense drinkability and charm. Sleek, mostly sophisticated and gentle chardonnay emerges.’

	From the ironstone sands of Heathcote’s pre-Cambrian era soils, a Fiano shaped by texture.
Raised on lees with generous stirring, it nods to the traditional ’sur lie’ coastal whites of Nantes in France.
Bright citrus, white peach and nectarine lift from the glass, with daffodil florals, savoury almond, saline minerality and a gentle creaminess from time on lees.
A wine of freshness, texture and depth.

	2024 GUM ‘A Field’ Viognier, Heathcote, Victoria. Viognier grown on the pre-Cambrian era soils of Heathcote, Victoria.
Organically grown viognier from Toolleen was pressed firmly as whole clusters. The juice was fermented and aged in a combination of stainless steel and seasoned Stockinger puncheons. An expressive wine - Earl Grey tea, white flower potpourri and herbal inflections lead to fuzzy white peach and tangerine zest. &nbsp;
I am deeply fond of the gastronomic white wines of the Rhone valley and encourage you to enjoy this wine with food.‘A Heathcote field, at that. And viognier the focus.

This is excellent.
It has depth and flavour, potency and poise. A chalky resilience in texture, a squeaky, chewy finish, and amongst all that dry apricot, nectarine, light pear, jasmine tea, frangipani and preserved lemon fruit characters abound. Everything just so here; a very structured, serious expression that doesn’t mind being laid back, tight and firm. That being said, there’s enough exuberant perfume to go around and sweet spice wafts through enticingly. Very good.’&nbsp;

	From deep red and gravel soils in the King Valley, this sangiovese rosé was grown organically at altitude.
Pale in colour, it shows an expressive perfume of wild strawberry, rosehip and blood orange.
The palate is dry and savoury with fine acidity and gentle texture.
A rosé of freshness and poise, built for both food and unbridled consumption. Artwork by Thomas Jeppe.

	‘DR’ (Dry Red) is drawn from the volcanic basalt and iron-rich pre-Cambrian era sands of Heathcote.

It’s a fragrant, light-medium bodied wine where brightness and drinkability lead the way.

Bright aromatics of strawberry, cranberry, and blackberry spill into a supple, finely textured palate layered with ferrous earth and blue-fruited freshness.

A wine of sheer drinkability, enjoy at cellar temperature or chill as you wish.

	From the sandy, granitic slopes of Mt. Alexander - these organically grown 40 year old vines were grafted to gamay over the last decade.
Due to the immaculate quality of this fruit - 90% whole bunch gamay was fermented and aged in stainless steel.
Fresh and energetic, this is an aerial example of the variety with floral and herbaceous aromatics. Crunchy, bright red and cool blue fruits are supported by fine lacy structure.
This fragrant and expressive wine is drinking immediately well though will also reward careful cellaring.Artwork by Thomas Jeppe.

	This Syrah comes from a vineyard we work closely with in Harcourt North.
Planted 40 years ago at the base of a slope on the northern reaches of Mt Alexander, the site sits on a visually striking mix of sand, mica-schist and Harcourt granodiorite. The clonal material is equally compelling, originally derived from massale selection cuttings from Hermitage and St-Joseph.

Harcourt granodiorite is a fascinating soil. Like granite, it formed during the Devonian period, though it contains a higher proportion of calcium-rich feldspars. Its influence on the wine is profound -bringing intensity and concentration, while the cool nature of the site ensures a long complex ripening period. The result is a wine of power and depth, held in check without elevated alcohol.

The wine is bright and fragrant. violet and blue florals lead into ripe raspberry and cherry, with black pepper, olive tapenade and a savoury note of jus gras.

I opted for syrah in the nomenclature of this wine as the style is powerful, fragrant and with glossy cool fruits.Artwork by Thomas Jeppe.

	Sourced from near 30 year old vines in Heathcote, this Grenache is fragrant, structured and fruit-driven, with vivid aromas of strawberries and blackberries, rose petal, laver and spice.

The palate is bright with a mouth filling texture, showing juicy red fruit wrapped in fine tannin and gentle savoury structure.

A poised and elegant expression that balances perfume with persistence.
